Have you ever looked at all of your hard work and wondered "will anyone appreciate what I've built when I'm gone?"
I recently traveled to Japan to celebrate some important milestones and had the pleasure of supporting quite a few small businesses. While purchasing their products, I learned many had extensive legacies, one even dating back 1,000 years. Yes, I poured tea in a shop that opened in 1000 AD and is still in operation today!
So how do we build businesses that people are still talking about over the next millennia?
During my travels, I also landed at the observatory of Tokyo’s Metropolitan Government Building. The view from the top floor reflects the kind of vantage point we should all strive to model when communicating.
Remember, you’re on the 50th floor now so why would you engage from the basement?
Here are some signs you need to go higher:
1) You spend more time talking about day-to-day drama with employees.
2) You can’t clearly define your long-term direction.
3) Your in the weed's reputation motivates you but restricts your team.
How do we make sure we lead businesses worthy of our great, great, great grandchildren preserving? Communicate like you are at the highest point of your building looking ahead, anticipating, planning.
As leaders, visionaries and builders, the story that's told in the future has everything to do with going higher today.
